The passage of time is unrelenting: End of Year Book Tag

AHHHHHH.

Okay. I mean, don’t get me wrong, time is arbitrary/a social construct/meaningless, but THE END OF THE YEAR IS SO STRESSFUL. Like…next year I will graduate college. I will have to find a Real Job in order to pay Real Bills and be a Real Person. Time, please stop!!!

But time will not stop. It is not in its nature.

Surprisingly, unnecessarily dark turn: check.

Anyway let’s get into the tag! Books! Yay! Always there for me and unchanged by time! This is just a fun way of wrapping up your reading for the year and looking ahead to next year.

I was tagged to do this by Ellyn @ Allonsythornraxx. Thanks love!!

Are there any books you started this year that you need to finish?

I am “””currently””” “””reading””” three books. They are:

  • Nevernight, which I am not currently into and in fact am not even bringing home with me for the holidays, so it would be both physically and emotionally impossible for me to finish before the new year;
  • Lolita, which is a very difficult book to read and requires me to take breaks, so I may or may not finish it by the end of the month (not exactly fitting with the holiday spirit, this one!!!);
  • and There’s Someone Inside Your House, which I just started in this airport (where I am also coming to you live with this post). It’s short. I should be able to finish it.

Really high expectations for myself.

Do you have an autumnal book to transition into the end of the year?

Autumn is over. The end of the year is all around us. I have no real way of answering this question.

I am going to choose to interpret it as a holiday-y book to get into the spirit, and the answer is…no???? I AM DYING GUYS I NEED CHRISTMASY BOOKS. I reread Anna and the French Kiss which somehow always feels very festive to me but is not really CHRISTMASY.

PLEASE RECOMMEND ME CHRISTMASY BOOKS.

Is there a new release you’re still waiting for?

In 2018? No. But also I almost never reallyyy Anticipate books.

Except for 99 Percent Mine, which I am choosing to believe is an okay answer for this question because at one point it was slated to come out this fall, before Sally Thorne and the publisher and literally everyone currently living in the world decided I am doomed to an existence of suffering.

What are three books you want to read before the end of the year?

I need to read four books before the end of the year to finish out my Goodreads reading challenge. <small(Yeah, I’m two books ahead of schedule, what of it?) I’d like two of those books to be Lolita and There’s Someone Inside Your House.

Also I wouldn’t be mad if I managed to get to Romanov (which I got on Netgalley and need to figure out how to read before I forget and my life rapidly deteriorates) and continue my Sarah Dessen and A Series of Unfortunate Events rereads.

Taking advantage of being near all my books! For once 😦

Is there a book you think could still shock you and become your favorite of the year?

Not…really?

SUCH a lame answer I know but 1) are you really surprised? And 2) I’ve recently read a lot of the books I thought had five star potential (When the Sky Fell on Splendor, Lumberjanes, The Language of Thorns, Alice’s Adventures Under Ground…I’M JUST TRYING TO END THE YEAR RIGHT).

But basically that means I’m sh*t out of luck for a book I think I could five star.

SURPRISE ME, UNIVERSE. PROVE ME WRONG.

Have you already started making reading plans for 2019?

Plans??? What??? Me??? Never.

I think I’m going to keep up this year’s goal of reading a classic per month (maybe up it to one and a half and make it three every two months). Tentatively considering giving myself a limit on how many books I can reread because ya girl is going to town.

But overall I like to live on the edge.

I think most people have been tagged in this already/it’s getting VERY close to the end of the year so I’m not tryna pressure anyone, but as always consider yourself tagged if ya feel it. Or let me know in the comments and I’ll formally anoint you.

Do you have any books you want to finish before the end of the year? Any you think you’ll five star?

(Can you recommend me a Christmasy book? Please I’m desperate.)

I’m trying to burn through netgalley arcs while I’m on winter break, and who knows if I’ll enjoy any of them in the process, but I also just started Sadie by Courtney Summers and it’s already breaking my heart, definitely a strong contender for a 5-star rating!

and oh man idk any Christmasy books either 😅 some YA anthologies maybe, but I’m not really a fan of those? the Harry Potter movies, and I guess the books by extension – they always have marathons on TV and my nerd family is united in our love for HP. oh, and I just finished (and really liked) Odette by Jessica Duchen, which is a modern Swan Lake retelling, so maybe not quite Christmas but definitely winter-y!

omg SO smart. i need to find my kindle charger so i can get on those netgalleys. & sadie is soooo good! considering rereading b/c i’ve heard such good things about the audiobook.

the YA anthologies are kinda a letdown but you’re so right — HP is so christmasy!! maybe i’ll reread the first book. thank you thank you!

Hey Emma, Other than A Christmas Carol by DIckens, I don’t know any Christmas Books. I think they go straight to movies (Love Actually, Nightmare Before Christmas, Fitzgerald family Christmas and Family Stone come to mind). Rest your weary little eyes, grab a bowl of popcorn and watch a movie before you’re off and running in 2019! Merry Christmas, girl!!

anyways!! you’re a legend for being ahead of your goodreads challenge of like more than 100 books probably and also a legend for attempting to read Nevernight. can’t wait to see your opinion of it since I made it 44 pages in before quitting!!

They’re not specifically Christmasy, but some of my favorite wintry books are East by Edith Pattou and The Apartment by Greg Baxter. They’re great cozy books to curl up with 🙂

I don’t really anticipate new releases either?? like everyone else is screaming about the 5 million new books coming out next year, and of those I really only like 2, and I probably won’t get around to those for another 7 years. But I suppose I’m still waiting for West by Edith Pattou, because even though it already came out I haven’t gotten it in at the library yet.

I splurged on Thrift Books the other day and bought a bunch of poetry, including This Way to the Sugar by Hieu Minh Nguyen and The Crown Ain’t Worth Much by Hanif Willis-Abdurraqib, which I’m very excited for!! I feel like those could both be 5 star reads. (Neither of them will be my favorite, though, because The Secret History is the best book of this entire year and That is That.)

What shocked me was that I just read PaperGirl by Cindy Wilson and have it five stars. I DIDNT EXPECT THAT! So now I don’t trust my judgement at all, because I was hoping one of my previous reads would be five stars and it wasn’t. 🤨 lol

Ahhhh, I couldn’t relate more to an intro. The next year is stressful for me for the same reasons you’ve mentioned. I wish you good luck and hopefully things will be great for both of us 💗
I hope you manage to finish the books you’re currently reading ❤ I’ve only read Lolita and I wouldn’t say it’s great for this period, to be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan. But I hope you like it more than I did ❤
I don’t really have plans to read something particular by the end of the year, I just need to read 2 books to complete my challenge.

yes i’m sure we’ll both be great!!! sending you good luck & hopes that the year will be less stressful than expected 😮

it’s not great for any period in a certain sense but that’s also kind of the point. i’ve been taking a lot of breaks so it’s taking me a whileee to get through it!!

      good luck with your challenge!
