Here is a really unpopular opinion I hold near and dear to my heart: I don’t like Disney that much (with exactly 2 exceptions). I would apologize for it, but I’m really not sorry. It has a lot of benefits for me. I can spend money without questioning whether I should save it to put toward a sweaty crowded “vacation” in a glorified cartoon-themed money pit. I can watch movies that are geared toward those taller than three apples high. I can even be aware that a new Disney film is coming out without ever viewing it!
It’s a good life, really.
However, add another thing to my
now-three=things-long Disney appreciation list: This tag! I ogled it from afar for a long time (picture me looking at pastries in a bakery, except the glass case is my laptop and my nose is definitively not pressed up against it) before the ever-lovely Rhea over at Bookchanted took pity upon me and tagged me in it. As always, I recommend you like this post but then immediately avoid reading it and check her take on it out instead.
Here we go!
Mushu from Mulan and Olaf & Sven from Frozen:
The Comic Relief / Name your favorite hilarious character or book.
Mushu from Mulan = the only Disney sidekick worth a minute of my goddamn time. Give me Eddie Murphy voicing a small dragon any day of the freaking week. If Disney were like this constantly maybe I could be BOTHERED ONCE IN A WHILE. Honestly Olaf can die.
Anyway. I really rarely find characters or books funny. Maybe my ego is so inflated from all my Disney disses (here me out on this one – Dissney. Is that something? Be honest, that’s funny, right) that I can’t see p
ast it well enough to get the joke, but everything about my human existence depends on me finding myself smart and correct. So. I will hold to this belief.
However, there are a few exceptions to this rule. I even have a Goodreads shelf to house them. The examples I will give, though, are Northanger Abbey and Persuasion by my
wife queen fave Jane Austen. SHE IS SO FUNNY AND SO UNDERRATED FOR BEING SO FUNNY AND I LOVE HER AND YOU SHOULD ALL LOVE HER TOO OTHERWISE YOU’RE DUMB.
The Seven Dwarves from Snow White
Are there people who are just, like, huge fans of the Dwarves? Is that anyone’s fave ensemble? Please sound off in the comments below if you’re big into the dwarves because I have a hard time believing that description fits ANYONE.
Anyway. Not the point. I understand that.
But there is only one answer to this question, and that is…
The goddamn motherf*cking Raven Boys, my guy.
Obviously there is my husband Gansey, who is my husband who I love. Blue who is very
cool usually, when this cool-ness does not require maintenance through tearing other girls down. Noah who is very small and spooky and my son.
And then Adam and Ronan, who are jus
t okay for now. Still a pretty good success rate, though.
Pascal from Tangled
The Loyal Cheerleader Chameleon (Not a Frog, Flynn Rider) / Name a book that started out one way but changed for you.
This seems, like. Really hard.
So I’ll just ramble about Tangled and hope an answer comes to me? Cool? Cool. (An illustration of how I can just pretend you all agree with me all the time. It’s actually really convenient for me when I’m actively making bad choices. Which, pretty regular occurrence.)
I like Tangled a lot. It is actually one of the aforementioned two examples of exceptions to my total Disney-neutrality. (Take a wild guess at what the other one is, based on the thing I cannot go one post without talking about.)
Can we agree that Flynn Rider is genuinely the hottest Disney prince? Perhaps the only truly hot Disney prince? Insert illustrative image(s) of him here. Also, that lantern-boat scene? Cinematograp
hic MASTERPIECE. Every other Disney movie is quaking.
Okay. I think I have to answer the question now.
Got it! The book A Million Junes. It started out an absolute five-star read, and then the second half of it changed…so much? And not for the better. You can read me talk a lot about it here. Not tryna do that again.
What did that question have to do with Pascal?
Meeko from Pocahontas
Pocahontas’ Sly & Sneaky Raccoon Friend / Name a plot twist that you did not see coming
I wish I had organized for all these things. A plot-twist shelf would come in major handy right now. I do not feel like raking through my Goodreads in the hopes of stumbling across a fitting response.
Sigh. My life is so hard, you guys.
Question: Do you guys think even saying a book has a plot twist is a spoiler? Then you know it’s coming! I personally like not knowing. That’s a true plot twist.
Someone shut me up. Please. By force if necessary.
I’ll just give the classic answer and say I didn’t see the plot twist coming in We Were Liars. If you say you did, you’re a goddamn liar and I don’t want to hear about it.
Rajah from Aladdin & Flounder from the Little Mermaid
Gentle with their Princess but Protective with Everyone Else / Name your favorite best friend in a novel
These character-love ones are haaaaaard. I love so few characters you guys!!!! At least I have a shelf for this.
Ooh, got it! I love Reagan from Fangirl. She’s profoundly underrated and a real bright spot in that Bible-length book. A real boost up to four stars let me tell you. That book is nOTHING without Reagan.
(Can you tell I’m trying to fill space so the image of the cover I’m inserting here won’t look super weird?)
Also, Rajah and Flounder THOUGHT they could. No one is more gentle-versus-protective than Reagan, bitch. (It feels weird saying “bitch” with so much proximity to two communicative-animal cartoon sidekicks.)
Louis from The Princess and the Frog & Sebastian from The Little Mermaid & Cogsworth, Lumière, Mrs. Potts and Chip from Beauty and the Beast
The Musical Bunch / Name a novel where music played a big part or made you want to sing its praises
Now that’s just unnecessary.
Every Disney movie is a musical. ATTEMPTING TO LIST THAT MANY CHARACTERS WHO SING IS JUST GODDAMN RIDICULOUS. I’m furious.
That being said…what’s a book in which music played a significant part that I actually liked…
Hahahaha. Well, I don’t know if I’d call it “like,” but I binge read the Mayhem series recently and that focused on a band. So there’s that.
Maximus from Tangled
The Obstacle in Flynn Rider’s Way / Name a character who faces a lot of obstacles
Now that’s more like it. Just one illustrative example of a sidekick to cover the whole question. Also, more Tangled.
But the answer to this question should be “every character ever.” Because no obstacles is a boring book, my friend. A boring, boring book.
But ya know what. Speaking of princesses and fairytales
except better than the ones we’ve been talking about. Ella from Ella Enchantedsure does face a lot of bullsh*t. I mean, an obedience spell? Come on! But definitely a lot more interesting than plain old fashioned Cinderella, who is just sooooo niiiiiice. She looooooves sleeping in fireplaces and getting yelled at. Very cool.
Anyway. That’s my answer.
Hamish, Hubert and Harris from Brave
Favorite family dynamics in a novel
Ooh, I LOVE a good family in a book. Usually it’s like, dead mom or orphan or creepy twins or abusive or, best ever, NONEXISTENT PARENTS. So it’s goddamn nice to just have a nice, typical, supportive family every once in a while.
That being said…there’s no family I love more than the one from I’ll Give You the Sun.
Dead mom trope for the win!
Ray from The Princess and the Frog / Fairies from Sleeping Beauty
The Advice Givers / Book that most impacted your life
Okay, um. I’m just going to come right out and say this. Um.
When does this tag end?
Has this gone on for a thousand years for anyone else? I may be biased because I have no wifi in my apartment, so thus far this has taken not one but two trips to Starbucks to mooch off wifi and eat mediocre pumpkin bread.
But my answer to this one isn’t funny, so I’m also going to very quickly say Just Mercy and move the hell on.
Hei Hei from Moana
Name a character who steals the show
Can I answer Gansey again? I feel like I haven’t told you enough times that he’s my husband. Because he is. And I love him. I just want you all to know.
But he’s kind of a main character so let me find a better answer. Damn it, this is pretty much the same thing as favorite best friend for me!!!!!
Yikes. I really don’t have an answer for this. I guess I’ll just say the characters from A Series of Unfortunate Events, because I always think the background characters in it are très fun. And Olaf and the evil troupe are constantly stealing the show man!!!! Literally. (Actors.)
Also I’ve never seen Moana.
Gus and Jaq from Cinderella
Opposites Attract / Name your favorite or worst opposites attract pairing
(chanting) The Hating Game, The Hating Game, The Hating Game!
Enough said, really. If you haven’t read that book yet then a) what the actual hell is wrong with you and b) why do you hate happiness and c) just do it you won’t regret it.
Okay I genuinely have to go because this Starbucks is freezing and my hands are about to fall off and also the employees are like “why have you been eating one slice of pumpkin bread for two and a half hours” so I’m not tagging anyone but if you feel like ya wanna do this then plz do!
Thanks again to Bookchanted! Check them out guys.
